I used to collect them. I tried to buy something with these at a very rural very southern gas station once, no clue what year but I was a teenager in highschool and could drive so around ’01 or ’02….I was turned away because they “don’t take no Mexican money”. Countries on the dollar that don’t get freshly minted paper currency into their economies benefit from the toughness of the coin vs. paper. Two problems with the coin: it was the same size as a quarter, and there were still dollar bills (which fit nicely in a wallet). If you (or your parents) were okay using quarters back in 1980, you should be okay using dollar coins now because they have approximately the same buying power. Similarly, if it was alright to have the penny as the smallest coin back in 1974, then anything less than a dime should be obsolete today. I remember when I worked retail the majority of the people who used these coins were guys that were living in halfway houses.

But keep the rewards that the spend created on their card. I’m Canadian and when I was like 11 I sold one to some old lady in line at a dollar store for 8 bucks and used it to buy candy so it all worked out for me, at least. I give these to my kids for the tooth fairy. The dollar coins are great. After living in europe for a few month I got use to have the $1 equivalent in my pocket in coins, once used to it felt faster to use and more convenient.
