We use them for tooth fairy money. I got $40 worth from a couple of banks, maybe three, but they’re a cool thing to give when my son looses a tooth. It took a lot of arguing, but they eventually took themI think it really failed because the US gov’t has yet to learn important facts that most other gov’ts already know: 1) You can only have 1 piece of currency that represents a given value, if you have 2 one of them will inevitably become less and less popular. 2) none of your coins can be the same size, because it fucks up automated vending. Having a dollar that machines read as a quarter a fair amount of the time was a hugely bad idea. I’m really surprised we haven’t had more trouble with 3) the populace benefits if various denominations of your currency are visually distinct. That’s why the pictures and value numbers on US bills keep getting larger, but the easy and more accessible way to do it is have your bills be different colors. I lived in Canada for a few years, I could tell the value of the money in my wallet at a glance because color=value up there. Side note: Canada has one and two dollar coins, the loonie and the toonie (or possibly “twonie”, I’m honestly not sure which spelling is in use), no one or two dollar bills, and they also got rid of their pennies a while back. All of these changes work fine and aren’t hard to grasp as a foriegner (also, I tend to throw all of my change in a big jar, which adds up really quickly when a good chunk of the changes comes in whole dollars, so yeah, “change jar” became “big money jar” pretty quickly).

They didn’t modify vending machines to take the Woodcrafting Education Is Important stars shirt and I will buy this dollar coin, and there isn’t an extra tray section in cash registers for the added coin. Imagine if they had tried this fifteen years later, when Game of Thrones was at its peak, and convinced a bunch of nerds that coin pouches were going mainstream. The whole thing probably would’ve been derailed by whatever derogatory term the fandom came up with to refer to the coins. I was working a parking lot for an NBA game 2010-2011ish. The people could pay me or pay the machine at the lot. I had a guy come up to me with a handful of Sac. dollars he got as change from the machine. He kept asking me if he could exchange them for money. He told me he was from out of town and hardly ever comes here. I could not convince him that they were real money. He seemed to think they were special parking tokens or special money he could only spend in the city. I eventually just exchanged him with money in my own wallet. The only way to get Americans to accept $1 coins is to just remove the paper from circulation. Each register was issued a full uncirculated roll that we were supposed to circulate to customers. I was a bit of a coin collector, so i swapped out cash to my drawer for the coins. I still have the unopened roll.
