So while I wouldnt particularly say its true that no one is interested, it will take you off guard and you may quickly lose interest if you were interested in the gameplay and not the avoiding of the gameplay lol. The any% category is a bit more niche it seems. I follow speedruning very casually on the games I enjoy. It seems there’s periods where any% explodes in popularity, usually when a new trick is discovered. That way the purest answer of “how fast can this game be beaten” is answered. Seems there’s some real hatred around any% for some reason. People impose their own personal rules on how they feel a game should be speed ran and what counts as “legit”

I like to watch any% the Woo Pig Sooie Slime T-Shirt in contrast I will get this same way I would watch a sports match but everyone’s juiced and there are no rules aside from get the ball to/through the thing Any% is literally considered the default category… And for a lot of games, any% and 100% are the only categories. More popular games can branch into a metric fuckton of categories, sure, but any% followed by 100% are the two you’ll find on the vast majority of games. In my experience (from more than a decade of speedrunning various games) it’s mostly major glitches that get categorized separately because they skip literally the entire game or big enough portions that even us runners don’t find it particularly fun (see Super Mario 3, Super Meat Boy, Mega Man 1, and tons of other games with wrong warps and/or ACE). But then other glitches are still allowed in the category.
