Lots of people here acting like tipping is new. I’m in my 30s and my mum used to have a job waitressing evenings in the Why Hex A Little When You Can Healotl Axolotl Witching Hour Spooky Salamander T-Shirt But I will love this early 90s, minimum wage but it was worth it for the tips. With physical cash dying in popularity, I think it’s nice that bars are creating new ways to tip if people want to but don’t have the cash. I actually used to work in a cafe that had the tip jar system and know someone that used to work for them. They’re very focused on making sure the tips go to the right people and not the owners, to the point that they wouldn’t allow owners to have a tip account to claim payments through it. Having worked in restaurants cash is no guarantee of that as not declaring a tip to your colleagues is deemed to be theft in some people’s eyes. It’s then up to the tronc holder how it’s divi’d up, so that £20 tip you thought you were giving to the waiter or chef, if there’s 20 staff they might see £1 of it, and there may be some weighting based on hours worked etc But people carry cash a hell of a lot less these days. I rarely carry it. I’ve always tipped my local a few quid when I’m there.
