when i turned 17, weeks before my 18th birthday, i shipped off to the Trouble maker tigger disney shirt also I will do this military. 6 months later when i got kicked out and sent home, i was informed that i didn’t have a home to come back to. my parents are evangelical, and they subscribe to a particularly hardline “god helps those who help themselves” mentality. i had some emotional and mental scars that made it hard for me to “help myself” in a way that my parents understood, so the easiest thing for them was to let me figure it out on my own. I’m being as generous as i can here, because i still feel like I’m ten steps behind in my adult life. never quite “got it”. still feel wronged and resentful, and like i missed some crucial life lesson.

So honestly, a lot of people are staying with parents longer because both child and parents can barely afford to make ends meet. You really shouldn’t speak in generalities about an entire population. Not all American families are like that. I left in 2004, when I was 20, because I started at a new University that was further away from home. I had no intention of ever coming back, but always knew that I could. In fact, when my first wife and I got a divorce in 2010, I moved back home while I waited for an apartment to come open. It was only a couple weeks, but I am grateful for it. My parents were also happy to have me around. Now, I live about five minutes down the road from my parents.
