My Nain and Taid had one. I loved it, the Three Cat Cute Hanging with my Cats merry Christmas 2023 Shirt moreover I will buy this room it led to was just the living room though so only used for passing a brew through. 10/10 I’d love one in my own house. We were scrubbers who ate tea in the living room while watching Star Trek (much to mine and my mum’s annoyance) but we never passed plates through it. It was purely for talking through at the time, plus the odd Sunny D passed through for me. My house was built in 1963, I live in the South East of England and I still have the serving hatch between the kitchen and dining area of our lounge. They seem really common round here in houses built between 1950s to 1970s. Lots of people have since removed them though. No, but there was one before we moved in & I wish it was still there! I can slightly see the outline of it under the cupboard on the kitchen wall. My flat was built in the 60s, NW also. I have been in other flats and houses on my estate that still had the hatch. Later we moved to eating in the tiny kitchen for some reason so the hatch became redundant. These days the door is back, no more hatch. My best friend had one in her house too. I think “hatch” was the 70s kitchen island or double sink. Aspirational!

Man I just had a childhood memory flashback, My nan had a hatch in the Three Cat Cute Hanging with my Cats merry Christmas 2023 Shirt moreover I will buy this kitchen remember her talking to us through it and passing food through it loved it. I work in social housing and I have come across rarely but still see it in properties always puts a smile on my face Boarded over or knocked through. Both the 1934 detached North Herts house I grew up and the 1940s London semi I lived in for 20 years had them originally. Ours is solid wood painted white but left open 99% of the time. Actually, probably all the time, I can’t remember the last time it was closed. Had one in my grandmother’s house in Cornwall, always thought it was kinda cool, not that we ate in that room much This unlocked a forgotten memory! We had a little hatch between our kitchen and front room. Was hardly used tbh Both my grandparents had them between the kitchen and the dining room. They are handy to be fair. If you’re passing plates back and forth it’s quicker than walking from room to room. They both had big houses though (4 bed detached) seems more odd in a 2 up 2 down. I guess originally there would have also been a dining table in the living room? I have a window shape gap between the kitchen and dining room (the kitchen is an extension to the Victorian-era house and there was indeed a window there once upon a time). I always call that a hatch even though it is not in fact a hatch. It’s where my cute 3ft Christmas tree goes. Yes, had one in the house I grew up in during the 60’s/70’s. You could pass food etc. directly from the kitchen to the table. We used it every day.
