My parents had one put in our house back in the This Girl loves Jelly Roll Shirt in addition I really love this 90s. I loved it so much, it had little doors on. The council came round and knocked the whole wall down some years later. Our house did growing up and all the houses on our estate did in the early 80s. The streets look fantastic in old photos, but years of random extensions and dodgy facades have turned the whole estate into a mess. It’s actually quite rough now and I think the ruined aesthetic has played a part in its decline. First the serving hatches go, then the dodgy extensions come, then the work vans parked everywhere, next thing you know you’re living in a shithole. My patents still have one and use it all the time! I know they’re not cool the days but it actually is really handy. My house (60s) had one but I had it filled in as I wanted to put the TV in front of it. Next door have kept theirs but I think they just use it as a shelf. The houses are tiny so it doesn’t save much time passing stuff through it rather than walking round!

Our kitchen is in an extension on the This Girl loves Jelly Roll Shirt in addition I really love this back of the house. Left the original window in the wall so we’ve got a massive one! My Grandpa’s house had one. It was the house he used when he came to the UK to visit family (he lives on the Isle of Man). He never used it, though. It was always taped up. I only got to open it and poke my head through it once, and that was when my Mum and I were clearing out the house for him when he decided to sell it. I’ve seen hatches in other houses that you could open and close. Some of “draw bridge” style and others with doors. All quite cool and I use them when they’re there. We had a massive hatch, like a window. It was like my Mum was show cooking in the kitchen. We always used it and it brings back massive nostalgia when I think about one.
