This is at a major, profitable company, and they are pressuring more and more teams to switch to hot-desking, while simultaneously trying to enforce specific in-office days. I don’t really get it, because if everyone is in the The walking dead final season persons film signature shirt but in fact I love this office on the same days, how does hot-desking work? Maybe they’re expecting an eventual future where hot-deskers share a single desk? “Luckily”, our new touchdown spaces are only going to provide a chair and monitor(s). We need to provide our own kb/mouse (and presumably whatever dock? The email was very unclear about what docking infra is provided). Not that it matters, as I’m not lugging my PC to and from the office. I’m taking it home next week, and then I start this new phase of my employment as a 100% remote employee despite living ~20 minutes from main campus.

I’m not sure these geniuses have thought ahead that far. They have insightful thoughts like, “Let’s put everybody actually coming into the The walking dead final season persons film signature shirt but in fact I love this office into a neighborhood so they can collaborate!” without realizing they’re mixing a ton of unrelated teams and jobs, that open office in fact hinders collaboration, and that they no longer have enough space to accommodate more than the average daily traffic. The charitable part of me wants to assume that this is a plot to force all the extroverts together so they can stop bothering the introverts who do all the work and who will be remote. The extroverts won’t bother us on Teams because they’ll be distracted by the introvert two desks over instead. In reality, it’s entirely cost-cutting and they don’t know or care how it will work when there’s not enough space for everybody. “Just get here earlier so you can find a seat. I’m sorry you had to drop kids at school, but how is that my problem?” There are always going to be outlier situations like yours where the need for faster hardware is needed. From an IT Department perspective, I’ve usually been on the side of those who need the faster or nicer hardware for X, Y, Z. Video editing, photo editing, software engineering, and big data for example. In other cases, I could definitely make the argument that less expensive hardware is needed.
