For example, Google’s Abuse and Moderation team which is probably dealing with a lot of web based tools, could settle in on some i3 or i5 Chromebooks, with small amounts of storage and use cloud offload, while maintaining a good RAM configuration (16GB in dual channel). Finance could use Windows PCs rather than MacBook Pros running Virtualization software or, ChromeOS rather than using the Take em to the train station dutton ranel Fajlu Sarder shirt besides I will buy this Mac as nothing more than a dumb terminal for Citrix/RDP/etc. Software engineers can keep the Macs or whatever high end workstation they’re using. Flexibility like that does increase the cost of logistics but can also net savings where it makes sense. But one also has to wonder if this has been in talks for ages. I know during the mid-2010s there was this massive craze of, give everyone a Mac, it’s more secure, it’s cheaper long term, etc, etc, etc. A lot of that was coming from JAMF Software sponsored blog posts, and I feel like plenty of executives fell hook and sinker to all of that, especially since they still get dinged on software licensing long term. Disregarding all of the Thunderstrike vulnerabilities, disk encryption bugs, lack of control macOS provides in some areas compared to Windows, SSD firmware bugs like not reporting NAND failure correctly, and the T2 Chip having unpatchable Checkm8 vulnerabilities. The big thing comes down to repairs. I don’t know how good Google employees are at taking care of their hardware, but the moment a machine comes back with liquid damage or a few dents to the chassis, that resale value that companies bank on for end of life hardware becomes effectively zero. The repairs for even things like a keyboard change or chassis replacement are going to cost at least the price of a new PC, and that won’t provide enough return to be worthwhile to do. Also, Apple produced a line-up of Macs from 2016 – early 2020 with notoriously bad keyboards, and now with the M1 processor on the market, the value of those machines are dropping like a rock comparative to other machines.

There’s a lot going on internally we probably don’t know about, besides “it’s just cheaper to give Chromebooks” to everyone. Maybe it’s a push to make ChromeOS less of a joke! Who knows. Most are not programmers, and even programmers are better off building code on a server. Pretty sure Google has server farms and know how to set up remote environments for programmers to build the Take em to the train station dutton ranel Fajlu Sarder shirt besides I will buy this code on the server farms in seconds rather than minutes on a top of the line workstation laptop that’s so large and heavy no one wants it anyway. Can they not throw all the heavy lifting analytics into the cloud? You only need a thin client or basic laptop/computer with a browser. Even Tableau can run in the cloud. If a physical device is really needed, VMs are the way to go. You don’t even need to offer employees a company computer. Their personal laptops can connect remotely. I remember growing up in the 00s and computers and laptops were getting significantly better every year. It made sense to upgrade every 18 months, laptop batteries were shit and laptops were disposable.
