They probably just mean increasing their upgrade cycle by a year from 3 to 4. Realistically, no one in accounting will notice a difference between a 2016 and 2020 Macbook Pro or a 13th Gen i5 vs 10th Gen i5. I’m a software engineer who does my work on desktop PCs because equivalent laptops are 2-3x as expensive. My work just decided my entire team that has been working hybrid doing 2-3 days per week will become “unassigned”, losing all our physical space because we didn’t average 2.5 days per week over an arbitrarily defined measurement period (some of us were out sick with Covid at that time, others were on vacation to match school break times, etc). Management justified it by saying, “Well, if you want assigned space, you can come in more often over the Sometimes I Just Look Up Smile And Say I Know That Was You cat shirt in addition I really love this next 6 months and you’ll get assigned.” But I can’t do that, because I’m not hauling a PC back and forth. Once I lose a persistent physical location for my work PC (not hotdesking!), I’m never coming back into the office ever again. Yeah, the PMs and managers who live out of Outlook and Excel and Powerpoint can do that. The engineers who keep the lights on can’t.

This will almost certainly be followed in ~6 months with an actual RTO mandate, “If you don’t come in 3 days a week you’re fired.” Agreed on hotdesking being disgusting and dehumanizing. I’ve been doing it for a couple of months, thankfully I’m not asked to go to the Sometimes I Just Look Up Smile And Say I Know That Was You cat shirt in addition I really love this office every day, but I’m assigned to a different desk every time. They have wipes on the desks which we are encouraged to use, but keyboards and mice have a lot of nooks for dirt and grime to build up, and I’m not really into sharing those… So I bring my own along with my laptop. I’m also on the short/small side (actually average for a woman at 5’4″ but the world isn’t built for women I guess), and the chairs are different at different desks. I need a seat around 16.5″ tall for my feet to touch the ground, but a lot of office chairs have a minimum height of 18″, so I can’t comfortably sit at some of the desks unless I swap chairs with someone. Plus a lot of the chairs have visible marks and stains on them and I always wonder what I’m sitting in. Maybe I’m a bit of a germaphobe but I just prefer to have my ass on the same cushion most days if I have a choice. I also used to sometimes leave a change of shoes or something at my desk when I had my own space, so I could bike or walk in, or go to the gym nearby after work without carrying too much. Now I either say “fuck it” and wear whatever in the office all day, or I carry a huge bag with me every time I go in.
