We’re gay so in some respect “not having kids” is a role chosen for us more than something we chose. In the nitty-gritty details it’s not so clear: my partner was in a straight marriage and might have had kids but for a cancer treatment that rendered him sterile. I only recently decided to settle down for the married life in the first place. We’re happy to be uncles to our respective kids in our lives and enjoy passing on bits of wisdom and irreverence toward the systems of authority as they exist (said systems having opposed our marriage from the start) “Regret” is the wrong word but I often think about the different ways life could have been in a different world. But that’s something I’m used to and I think everyone has to face that landscape of paths not taken eventually. I will say we both feel like we have love to give to the younger generation and have sought out paths to do so. But sleepless nights and changing diapers, we’ve done some and have no desire to do more. Being the “queer uncle” is an interesting enough job and suits us just about right. The kids we help on their journey to adulthood will get what guidance we have and that’s all we have to give.

41. No kids w/vasectomy. I don’t regret my decision one bit. We may regret it when we’re old and feeble, but there’s no guarantee your child would be around that long anyway. I was adopted with 0 knowledge of familial medical history and I have some issues of my own. That coupled with all the The Iron Bull shirt and by the same token and shit that kids face today and I’d say it was an easy decision. I didn’t want kids – now I have four which is a whole other story – but the pertinent story I have here relates to two friends of mine. Their husbands changed their minds. By then it was too late for my friends to have children. Both men hit 40 and had a bit of a midlife crisis, broke up, and the ex husbands now have wives ten years younger with many children. Both my friends are now still childfree but not in the way they had intended and every man they meet now has children and step-parenting is a completely different role they also do not want. Childfree people are a very limited dating pool. Very challenging. So I would say – imagine your future without kids, and without the husband. If you think that would be fine and you’d still be okay with that, then that’s how you know you’re making the right decision. Create your own life now where your future will be enough for you and you alone with however the chips fall. Don’t put all of your future into your husbands hands.
