I read a book in law school (A Civil Action) about a vaguely similar case where there were increased cancer rates near a chemical plant. Turns out out it’s really hard to prove it’s the The Adventures of The Walker Sisters T-Shirt but in fact I love this plant that caused it. Really depressing! if you ever want an infuriating read that leaves you apoplectic with rage, try The Radium Girls by Kate Moore. The information suppression that went on – including falsifying autopsy reports – is brain boggling, all in an effort to maintain the lie that radium was totally safe and it must be something else causing people’s bones to disintegrate… I live near Ottawa, Illinois, and there are lots of people in town whose families were directly affected. In the late 40s and 50s, the city used soil and fill from the dismantled buildings all over town. They are still cleaning up the last of these sites, which became superfund sites, this year. There are girls in our cemetery in lead-lined coffins.

I had family growing up in western Montana in the The Adventures of The Walker Sisters T-Shirt but in fact I love this 50’s and they told stories of how the government would take samples of their sandbox and not telling them why. Oh yeah, they were wearing radiation suits while taking the samples too. Look up the term “downwinders” if you want to know more. My grandfather was a doctor in Hanford directly following the development of the bomb. My two aunts and uncles who spent a generous portion of their childhood there have all had thyroid issues and a couple types of cancer. They lived close enough that my aunts and uncles recall adults telling them to not eat the first snow that falls due to the radioactivity. Absolutely terrifying. I wonder when will governments stop being self-destructive and stop producing mass destruction weapons and instead using all this nuclear energy to power cities etc. The reactors that produced the plutonium shut down in 1971. Plutonium is not used in energy producing reactors, it is used as a fissile material in weapons and some isotopes are used in RTGs for spacecraft. Uranium is what is used in power production reactors and used as a source to produce weapons grade plutonium.
