As a manger of a large team, we stopped making counter offers a long time ago, as the Stephen Dalton legends never die shirt Additionally,I will love this folks that accept leave usuall within 9 months. (1) We know our pay is very compeditive, (2) Our benefits packages is great (3) Our pension plan is a set of golden handcuffs. So if someone is leavin it’s extremely rare that is is for better compensation. We only make a counter offer if the persons departure would have an immediate and unavoidable impact on the business. But as we cross train everyone, it rarely happens anymore. Personally I accepted one conter-offer, but it was not for money, it was a change in role/promotion + money and I did not regret it. And it likey worked as the offer I had was internal with the company in another division. Glad I accepted it, but not because of the money, it moved me to report to a director that I really respected and benefited my career imensely. Love this. Not even going to read down to see the “cost of replacement” stans. If you aren’t prepared for anyone’s departure, you didn’t do your job.

Unpopular tactic: for those in my industry I really want, I squeeze them. They tell me what they want, I add to it and tell them at that price, I’m paying you more than YOU even think you’re worth. I’m paying your requested salary, then I’m paying a premium to ensure you aren’t using me as your passive negotiator with the Stephen Dalton legends never die shirt Additionally,I will love this other place. Only one company is making you that offer today, and I would have made it yesterday too. Some years ago, a manager went to bat for me and got me a 30% payrise (I was pretty underpaid). I would crawl through hell for her to this day. I’ve never forgotten it. I stayed and did not have to learn a whole new way of doing things with a whole bunch of new people. Stress of a new job is also worth a lot of money. I didn’t regret it because I was just buying time until I found a better opportunity anyways. I knew they had little choice but to offer me something and that was the goal when I went to them. To get a temporary pay bump until I could get out of there
