I’ve done it twice and it was fine both times. I’d guess my salary is $20-40k more per year now because of counter offers in the Taylor Swift The Eras Tour 2023 Shirt Besides,I will do this past. I was always careful to make it clear that I loved the job and $$ is the only reason I was considering something else. Maybe some jobs don’t try to screw you with low raises year after year, but none that I’ve ever had. If you like your company and don’t want to job hop every few years to keep up with inflation, counter offers seem to be the best option. I definitely agree that it is a very personal decision, just generally curious to hear some anecdotes about people on both sides of the equations. Perhaps someone has an experience that applies to me that I hadn’t considered in my own personal decision making process.

Lots of regret in this thread, so I feel obliged to drop in my positive anecdote. I work tangential to several groups of younger folks, and am always happy to offer advice and guidance. About a year ago, someone from an Operations team came to me to tell me they got cold-called by a recruiter offering them 30% more than their current salary. I understood that they did not really want to leave, but the Taylor Swift The Eras Tour 2023 Shirt Besides,I will do this offer was just too good. I then helped them formulate a strategy that ended up with them getting a 45% counter, which they happily accepted. I still work with this wonderful engineer all the time, so I’m glad it worked out. I agree that it sucks that employees often need to get a new offer to get a substantive raise from their existing employer, but it seems to be the way of the world.
