Tbh I work at big tech and this is a well deserved change. To put things this way, I was give a $3500 laptop, and 99.9% of my work is done over SSH into a remote server farm. Basically, I use zero of that compute power. I don’t even really use the School is important but baseball is importanter vintage shirt besides I will buy this keyboard, mouse or display (I use a docking station with a monitor). This could all be accomplished with say a Chromebook or thin client. I’m a lawyer. Whenever our server (or what ever the fuck it is) goes down there’s like 60 lawyers who cant work – that’s a lot of billable hours. And it happens often. That’s a lot of money being lost. Actually a significant amount of work is done via web apps so actual laptop hardware (and the need to refresh frequently) doesn’t matter as much. What they refer to in the article is how often they get refreshed, and making most employees who aren’t engineers work on chromebooks. What they are also probably doing is determining who actually needs a laptop since they are more expensive, the downside being that you lose on work flexibility. Perhaps another technique to force people back into the office.

That’s always been a problem. Some workers need more processing power and memory than others but there’s cost benefits on package deals that makes incentives to conforming to a single standard. Exceptions often don’t have a bases in productivity but position. I know I’ve had to craft presentations on why a device is unsutable for certain use cases and argue for something more appropriate. This even goes back to when I worked contract security and we were supplied with a desktop that was incapable of running the School is important but baseball is importanter vintage shirt besides I will buy this application used for cctv playback. To be fair I think google just lets you order a new laptop nilly Willy and people just upgrade for the hell of it every year. You can figure out what you need for at least more than a year and do scheduled updates like every other company does.
