I think that’s social media gets blamed for a lot of things but I think that it’s really consumer culture, celebrity obsession etc that is really to blame here. These factors were in place prior to social media, the Snake Mountain Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this internet is just able to magnify this so much Yes. There was always lots of shittiness under the background, but I think generally people were a little more focused, a lot less pissed off, a lot less prone to renting and arguing with each other. Social media also stokes a lot of entitlement in my opinion. You can go on and say someone did something to you, and tell the world about the awful thing you did back to them, and 100 people will come online and tell you how the other person totally deserved it etc etc. In my opinion, well certain aspects of the internet and social media bring out the very very best in people (Go to specialist sub and ask for help about something, see how fast you get it! People are super happy to help!), It also brings out the very very worst in some people, and encourage some people to fall into these horrendous cycles of awfulness. Then you end up with flat earthers, covid deniers, q Anon type people, incels and all sorts of other incredibly toxic behaviors getting substantially reinforced.

The world is about the Snake Mountain Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same. Social media has done wonders for marginalized groups in particular. I think it overall though makes us less happy with being average. The irony is people will talk about “the good old days.” referring that life was better before the internet. Yet many of these people spend hours online. I don’t think we can tell because we’re still in the middle of the changes. That said, as of now in the US it seems to have been a net negative, but for the world overall, probably a net positive. We’ll better understand it in another 20 years or so. Instead of using it like a car to go from one place to another folks seem to use it like a tank n just crash through everything. I know I am glad i didnt grow up in the age of camera to the face for everything. Its a real black mirror episode right now it feels like. ill never forget setting up my first twitter and instagram accounts and being like tf only a few people in my class use these. oh how times have changed It’s also better because it gives people a voice, and an alternative to mainstream media. That said a lot of content is misinformation. But it also gives EVERYONE a voice, even those that should know to keep quiet, many people get locked into echo chambers of similarly minded individuals, those spaces can be incredibly hate filled, the same happens IRL, but it can be hard to find people that are that extreme, social media naturally pulls them together.
