When I first started out I was a typical Aussie dickhead who thought he knew it all and was better, more informed and more highly skilled than anyone else. I was an arrogant prick, but in hindsight, no different to my countrymen who I came across from time to time. So I guess I was fairly typical. In those work environments, I had the She loves the Dallas Cowboys shirt But I will love this shit kicked out of me continuously for about three or four years before I worked out how to blend in and get on in a completely different cultural environment. The workers it turned out were all PhD holders in their countries before moving here, but because they had accents, they couldn’t parlay that experience into good jobs, so they ended up as clerks. The irony was their managers were know-it-all arrogant dumb asses who pretended to value their team but, in reality, looked down on them. Typical management training BS. I could see it plain as day. The actual reality was the She loves the Dallas Cowboys shirt But I will love this inverse… cultureless assholes compared to refined, well educated and decent, balanced men and women who had no other choice but to take the shitty job offered them. There is no hope for progression for them and they know it, but just keep their heads down and do the work. They would never consider an Ethiopian assistant manager at that workplace, for sure.
