They’re getting outraged at situations that may not even develop. Yeah, this ain’t great. But you know what? There are poor fuckers with nowhere to live in London. This is a minor inconvenience at best I’ve seen a blind person and their guide dog struggle to get around a load of hire bikes blocking the pavement, while someone was leaving yet another bike there. I reported it to the council and within a week there was a car parking spot co-opted to be a designated bay for hire bikes/scooters on the road, and the pavement has remained clear. Okay great sounds like the system works then. In the case you saw was there ample room to one side of the bikes were they could get around or had people blocked the entire pavement with bikes?

There was not ample room. A compact and well-used bicycle infrastructure giving an alternative to cars. It’s unbritish. Sorry, what infrastructure? I don’t see any racks or proper bike storage here – just ebikes left all over the pavement. The bikes aren’t the problem, it’s the inept twats trying to govern it. You could skim Reddit comments for 5 seconds and come up with better rules than this. What is exaclty the difference with someone using it for tables and chairs for their cafe and not paying for it? I was in London a few weeks ago for a show and I had to call an ambulance for an old lady who tripped over one of these sticking out from the bike collection point, fell onto the road and knocked one of her front teeth out. kind of traumatising for both of us as I had to go and run to the Costa nearby and grab a cup of a milk to put the tooth in while my friend got her a chair from a cafe nearby Amsterdam, Copenhagen, etc are not an apples to apples comparison. First there is a lifetime of etiquette and social expectations for the user, there is the issue of caring for what you own and third there is infrastructure to handle that level of bikes.
