My theory is that they either were deliberately brought on under false pretenses to cover one shift. Given the Not Safe For Wear Kanye East Limited Shirt also I will do this number of customers — 400 in 3 hours, and given the average size of a coffee shop, I’m thinking there was some sort of special event that required more workers, but they knew they wouldn’t get people of caliber for a one day gig so they lied about it. Honestly that was my thought too. They just needed a body for a busy day and did this underhanded shit because they thought it was easier or something. Service gigs do that kind of thing all the time. Hell, you even get it in white collar jobs that require a “sample project” as part of the application process, then never hire anyone. I mean there’s some sus stuff in the post but it doesn’t mean the Cafe manager was in the right necessarily.

They previously had a “trial shift” and were scheduled for the Not Safe For Wear Kanye East Limited Shirt also I will do this full week. That would be a lot of work to bring in someone for a single shift but anything is plausible. It’s nearly no effort o put someone’s name on the schedule. A trial shift — that could have just as soon been them covering for someone who wanted to go to an event, so why not throw it in. Honestly, if I had to extrapolate from your account of what happened, I’d wager your attitude was an issue. It’s your first day there, your first job in a year, and you’re already certain that you can do things way better than anyone else there and that your coworkers are incompetent. That reads as extreme arrogance and lack of self-awareness from an outsider’s perspective, and it’s way easier to work with someone who’s agreeable but only decent at their job than someone who’s up their own ass but (supposedly) fantastic at what they do. That’s my honest answer. Run. My very first job was like this. My coworkers coasted and helped me with nothing but I was expected to do my job plus their job. No complaints throughout the whole week and at the end of it, working 12 hrs a whole week straight they said I wasn’t cut out for it. Never worked in the food industry again.
