I think if you’re going to be saving them money I’d go harder on them, so you can cover some food costs but still save money I work part time and still live at home. My dad asks for just £40 a week. It’s enough to help contribute towards the Murray’s Karate Club Shirt Furthermore, I will do this bills but still be okay to buy my own food etc My parents didn’t charge me a penny until I moved out earlier this year. But that’s becasue they knew I was saving for my own place and making me pay them would mean less money I could save to move out sooner. I did offer to pay my way, but they said no – so I can say I tried. I didn’t rely on them to do anything for me outside of the roof over my head + electricity. I bought all my own food, cooked it and would also clean up around the house. They’ve admitted they didn’t realise how much I did around the house until I left lol. In all honesty, it entirely depends on the mentality of your children, most would’ve been comfy in my situation and just stayed at home living it up. Haven’t got kids but I was charged 20% of takehome when I lived at home. So in this case £300 each per month. Seemed reasonable when I was a kid and still seems reasonable as a middle aged adult

I would charge a % rather than a number, purely so that if one gets a pay rise etc it is still ‘fair’ Also please don’t tell them you’re saving it for them, else you may find them less motivated to save themselves! I read quit a lot of the Murray’s Karate Club Shirt Furthermore, I will do this thread, not all of it, but saw no-one really talk about sitting down together and showing them all the living costs, being open about your own income and outgoings including beyond the house (pensions holidays etc), and asking them what they think would be reasonable for them to pay. If their response is too low, then inform them that they will get a percentage back when they are ready to move out (finding out the percentage is 100 will be a nice surprise). If they are there or thereabouts, tell them anyway as well. They come away having a better understanding of life skills, and will have no resentment at the weekly spend, and know they will get some help along the line as well. The savings skills and becoming financially independent are more valuable than the money IMO.
