I think the Muppets drummer currently unsupervised I know it freaks me possibilities T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this problem is not that there are “zero” consequences, but that the consequences don’t deter behaviour at all. There’s a push in education to move away from the “punitive” (i.e. detentions, getting sent outside, yelling) and move to a “restorative” model where you focus on conversations and getting the kids to understand their behaviour, get to the bottom of where it came from, and get them to realise how it affects others. It sounds lovely, but it actually does jack shit for actually helping, and we sit in hours of repetitive PD for restorative practice and the schools can’t actually implement it properly beyond removing detentions and saying “but have you sat down and had a talk with the kid who spat in your face?” A lot of the time kids are shit just because they’re teenagers. You’re not going to get a come to Jesus moment where they realise that their behaviour impacts others because they already know and they don’t really care. I don’t mean this to sound like I think they’re all psychopaths. Many people (myself included) look back on their teen years and think “wow I was a shit back then”.

What you get in reality is that the Muppets drummer currently unsupervised I know it freaks me possibilities T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this kids absolutely know what to say to tick the boxes, like “I’m sorry about how my talking is having a negative impact on those around me. I will try harder in the future.” And you know they’re bullshitting you but you don’t have the time or energy to call them out on it. So then the extreme of knowing that the consequences are pretty weak, is how you end up with kids pushing the boundaries really hard like the ones in this article, and filming it, and thinking, you can’t do anything about it, because YOU’LL get punished for punishing us. Tbf even under a punitive model the consequences are weak. For a lot of kids there’s nothing the teachers could do to them that’s going to match up to the shit they deal with outside.
