I realize I am still lucky to be doing this well at all…but a couple generations earlier with this sort of profession and entering into late career I’d be comfortably upper middle class and have a fat pension waiting for me…as it is I am doing fine but very much still middle class and instead of a pension I have the Merry Christmas snoopy and friends xmas tree light shirt and by the same token and 401k which isn’t nearly as good as an old-school pension. I’m Also renting a condo because housing ownership is out of reach in my absurdly HCOL area despite an income that looks impressive on paper. Housing in my area literally starts at $950k for a town home and goes up from there. But In all fairness everyone seems to leave out that they also made like $2 an hour and they didn’t spend their money on bull shit like we do , think about it , my father bought a house and supported a family of 4 in the 80s while making $4.50 an hour , and his house cost $67k in Chicago ..but he didn’t have a iphone , Comcast internet , Netflix , Hulu , Jordans ect .. so think about it , houses cost $250k -$300k 4 to 5 times more , but ppl make about $15-$20 an hour , also about 5 times more than ppl in the 80s .. except again , ppl didn’t spend money on bull shit . So yes things cost more but your also making more money , so live simple like ppl did before and you’ll see you can actually afford a house and car and kids , and yes i have all that , and my houses are paid off and i didn’t even finish high school ..

My mother’s mortgage in the Merry Christmas snoopy and friends xmas tree light shirt and by the same token and late 70s, early 80s was $90 a month. She was only a hairdresser during those days so she didn’t make much and I remember years of her walking to and from work. She’s 74 now, a boomer, but knows the reality of finances now vs then. She’s been HR for 20+ years but still can’t retire yet. When my dad had about the same working experience as me in the same field doing more or less the same job he made almost exactly what I am making now. 34 years ago Boomers’ parents gave them every single chance to do anything they ever wanted, and now the boomers have enjoyed all of that, pulled up the ladder after themselves, and now this generation are ‘lazy’ because they can’t afford anything anymore It’s an apples and oranges comparison. Ask your great grandparents how often they bought a new phone, how much their monthly service charge was and how many channels they paid a monthly subscription fee for. The biggest monkey in our system’s wrench is the move towards subscription services for literally everything. [BMW now offers a subscription service for heated seats]Fail to pay, the company stops their function. I can’t imagine driving a ten year old beemer I paid off years ago and still needing to send a check for the heated seats. I think satellite radio is a rip off! You want me to pay monthly in perpetuity for my heated seats?
