Of course i cant just walk away every time a customer gets angry but this job makes it feel like you have to take the Merry Christmas Cute Santa Sweatshirt and by the same token and harassment. Wish shit would change. For the record, you can disengage/walk away from a customer who is being actively hostile. It’s not our job, or anyone elses’ really to take any sort of abuse. Doesn’t matter if they are a “customer”. WM would have a hard time fighting with your states UI/DOL if they fired you for “walking away from a customer”. The first thing I always tell new hires when they join my team (I’m a team lead) is if a customer gets angry, try to help de-escalate as best as you can. And If they start screaming? Walk away. I personally will never understand managers that have an issue with an associate walking away from a screaming customer. Of course, I want to add, I never encourage it as a first option. Only when things get out of hand and the associate feels threatened or uncomfortable helping the customer further. I left when a customer spit in my face and management refused to do anything about it. I had to go wash my face, put on a smile and return to work. The customer was allowed to check out with the items they had and leave with no report. They expect us to take an ungodly amount of abuse due their precious 5 start reviews.

I have never masked while at this job. If i’m dealing with a customer who has a whole attitude they’ll either see the Merry Christmas Cute Santa Sweatshirt and by the same token and irritation on my face or they’ll hear me say something to them. Walking away feels so good though because you know even without looking at them that they’re shocked or more irritated than you are At the Walmart I worked at our Managers were spineless. If a Karen demanded to speak to a manager we’d go to the back, and our Assistant Managers would ask “Are they mad? Are they yelling?” We’d say obviously. They’d tell us “I’m going to then give it a few minutes and hope they burn themselves out and go home.” As a previous manager at other retailers I was blown away by how cowardly they were at Walmart and how instead of trying to de-escalate the situation and make things right how they’d sit in the back letting the customer get more pissed. Many of us got so tired of taking the verbal beating and lying for the manager saying “he’s busy at the moment but said he will be with you shortly”. That we eventually started to throw them under the bus like they were doing to us. We’d straight up tell them “he said he’s too busy and doesn’t feel like dealing with that right now. He can’t be bothered but said feel free to call corporate they totally want to hear it.” Turns out corporate doesn’t care cause those spineless managers have been there for years.
