This is the answer, threaten to cut one of your fingers off each time he tries to talk to you, and tell him you just don’t like him anymore. Holy shit. I am so glad I asked. Question is, do you really want to end the friendship or do you just want him to help himself so he can be a better person to spend time with? 30 years is a lot of history to just write off. The guy sounds super depressed to me (been there, still am but I now have the tools to drag myself up by the boot straps when I need to rather than making others suffer). He sounds like he needs a good talking to, a bit of a reality check and you to point him in the right direction to seek help, and then leave it with him. Only he can help himself after all. You don’t have to be his counsellor but you might be the guy that indirectly saves his life with a bit of a compassionate kick up the ass that he sounds like he so desperately needs…Don’t be afraid to set boundaries though, if he is well aware that him not sorting his shit out will result in you not wanting any more to do with him and still does nothing then that’s entirely on him.

If it’s beyond salvageable though, just stop bothering with him. I had to do the Marvin Bagley III American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt moreover I love this same with a friend of 15ish years because frankly he was nothing but a user who only spoke when he wanted something. Took me way too long to suss him out, but my life is a lot simpler without him and all the crap he brought to the table in it. Obviously you two have been friends for a long time so don’t take this question the wrong way, but do your conversations go any deeper than surface level? Only because it sounds like he’s going through some stuff mental health wise. Maybe he’s unhappy with where his life is and isn’t able to communicate that? How often do you talk to him more openly about the things/struggles going on in your lives? How you’re really doing etc. He may really need help but is struggling to ask for it but just values spending time with you, even if it’s not pleasant for you anymore. On the other side, if you’ve tried to talk about all this with him before and he genuinely just doesn’t want anything else from life then there’s not really much else you can do. He also needs to find it within himself to a certain degree to seek change/ask for help.
