Maybe say you’ve noticed a lack of motivation in him & suggest he talks to a GP about feeling low. Sounds like he needs your help. He may not want it but try anyway. Also maybe suggest a different activity. Walking somewhere nice cheers you up and it’s easy to get into deeper conversations about life and such. I disagree. Sounds like OP has skipped a few steps and landed at a decision to reluctantly cut his friend loose because he doesn’t know what to do about his frustrating relationship.
