You don’t necessarily have to stop being friends. Lead by example and be strong. Be adamant that you’re quitting drinking, that you won’t be going to the Marcus Sasser American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt also I will do this pub anymore to avoid that temptation, and tell him that you hope he can join you in doing so. If he just wants to continue living that old life then he’s going to be going to the pub on his own, and that will be an excuse to maybe cut down on seeing him so much. If he decides to join you in pursuing sobriety then that’s a huge first step into getting his life together. I had a friend that I’ve known since school (we are both 37) we both work at the same place a little over an hour away and for 4 years had been sharing lifts to work. However this friend is one of the most negative, judgemental people I’ve ever met. He always knows what people should have done and is a self proclaimed expert in everything. He absolutely loved confrontation and would actively seek it out. Never shy of a good facebook argument. Most people cannot stand this friend, including me he has 4 people he could count as “friends” one of those friends even has him blocked on facebook to avoid his comments

I always put up with his behaviour because he had just always been this way and I felt as if “I can’t be mad at this behaviour because he has always been like that” So anyway, my partners dad got married a few months ago and when I got to see him afterwards the Marcus Sasser American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt also I will do this first thing he said to me was “You looked awful in that suit” and it all hit me. This person has never said anything nice to me, never congratulated me. I’m not the best looking man in the world, and it was not the suit comment directly more just “I’m your friend why would you say that? just say nothing at all if that is what you think?” I just told him “I think i’m done with you mate, I cannot take your negativity” He just responded that he understood and that was that. I blocked him on everything I use, steam battle.net etc.. and we have not spoken since then. Honestly my mental health has been so much better. We don’t share lifts to work anymore so i’m not in a bad mood from listening to his negative attitude on the drive. I don’t have to deal with his nasty comments. It feels like a massive weight has been lifted from me I wish I had done it sooner.
