When our kids were growing up, I never forced them to eat. If they did not like the Lucky Love Leprechaun St. Patrick’s Day shirt it is in the first place but food, they could get a sandwich or some fruit. My husband, however, would always complain about the kids not eating well enough. He was genuinely worried they could not get enough nutrition. And would try to convince them to eat more or make deals with them like if you eat half then you can get dessert. (Never forced them or layed a hand on them) So after loads of research, we came to a conclusion. The kids can choose their own portion and have to try to eat a bite of the dinner that is given, if they did not like it or where genuinely not hungry, they could go for the sandwich/fruit. But the priority was that dinner was a nice experience for us as a family.

So I think it just comes from old values to eat the Lucky Love Leprechaun St. Patrick’s Day shirt it is in the first place but food that was given to not waste any and genuine concern of getting all the nutrition a child needs growing up. A cousin I grew up with folks were that way – at least the aunt. They had to try everything placed on the table. Which was fair and all. But even if they spooned a bit on their plate she made them ‘take more and eat it’. When my cousin almost vomited once, she got slapped, which was abuse. Punished for her body rejecting food it didn’t like. And made me so mad as a kid. A friends parent did this also … made her little brother sit at the table to finish a Creole bean stew she’d made, claiming the father loved that stuff. So the boy should love it too. Smelled awful and I pitied him as he was forced to sit there for nearly an hour, fighting back tears and trying not to throw up. Then punished for not liking something his dad loved as she dumped the food out then sent him to his room as punishment. Good lord. I guess some parents might have experienced real hunger at some point of their lives, so they are afraid of it. Or the grandparents grew in hunger times and taught their children (now parents) this behavior.
