This! My 4 year old is not a dinner guy, but he will eat three breakfasts worth of food. If he is happy and feels full and energetic all day why do I care when he eats most his food?! Oh some people still do it. They do it for the LOVE Restorative Aide Life Leopard Valentine’s Day T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this exact reason you put your son’s food in the fridge, they’re just too clueless to solve the problem like you did. I’ve seen a lot of people say they do make their kids finish their dinner (always salmon, rice, and broccoli, somehow) because “they’ll ask for cookies and claim to be starving the minute I throw the dinner out if I don’t.” It just doesn’t occur to them not to throw the dinner out. I assume their parents did it to them so they do it to their kids. I think a big part is giving kids a choice. My toddler doesn’t like to eat her dinner most of the time, but I’ll usually just ask her “do you want to eat or do you want to go to bed hungry?” Sometimes she chooses hungry, sometimes she stops and eats her food, sometimes she says she’s hungry but just sits at the table as a way to delay bath time.

Like, yeah, we could force her to eat her food, but there are some lessons you just kind of have to learn on your own. Going to bed hungry one night isn’t fun, but it won’t hurt you. (Plus she snacks throughout the LOVE Restorative Aide Life Leopard Valentine’s Day T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this day, so I’m sure on those “I’ll be hungry” nights, she’s not actually hungry) Go to bed hungry enough times, and eventually your brain will be like “hey, how about maybe no” That’s how my parents did it for me. They’d say fine, go hungry, but if you want to eat later, it’s the plate or nothing. We dance too! But it’s not quite the same. I just have to figure out if she’s actually hungry. Some days she’ll eat more than me. Some days, she survives on air. I always save her plate just in case she gets hungry later. If not, I don’t force her. Being a parent to a human child seems so utterly exhausting! I am NOT comparing fur babies to real children but I wanted to mention that my cat does the same thing. Begs for food, I give her the food, she takes a few bites and walks away to do something else. I’ll pick her up and put her back in front of the food and she’s like “oh yeah, I wanted that”. Every god damned day.
