My 5 year old takes 2 bites and says he’s full. When he says he’s hungry 5 minutes later and he asks for candy as a snack, I pull out his plate, show it to him and ask if he wants it heated up or not. Edit: I will say my mom does have stories of her sitting at the table until bed time because she wouldn’t eat her sweet potatoes. I don’t think that’s as common as it once was. I’m sure it still happens with some abusive parents. Even if I did make my toddler sit there for a while longer, I wouldn’t make him sit there without me sitting there as well with my plate still in front of me too. To him then it’s just still dinner time and not some punishment. Making dinner seem like a punishment is going to make every dinner so terrible for everyone.

Exactly how I do it. People in this thread acting like there is only one small window to eat that plate that was made. I’ve seen like 30 comments say “if they don’t eat dinner, they will just go grab candy”. But the response is not to forcefeed them, its to make sure they finish an appropriately sized meal, and maybe that’s just later, before desserts. Also, a thing that nobody mentioned is that kids themselves are individuals. When topics like this get brought up, the word “kids” is used in a way that implies that they are all the same and there’s only one way to do it. My daughter is very good with meals, but would eat unhealthy stuff if it was up to her. My son is the complete opposite. Impossible to get to eat meals together with us, but snacks on fruits and veggies on his own throughout the day so I’m not as worried about him if he doesn’t want to eat what we’re eating. On top of this not everyone is the same. I am in my 30s and I essentially eat one meal a day during my work week and on weekends I may have a light lunch. I’ve never been a big breakfast either and lunch has always been hit or miss.
