30 year old woman in London here, I get called “darling” by older men or women pretty often, friendly shopkeepers/car mechanics etc. I take it as the Los Angeles Rams Graphic Shirt in other words I will buy this same as ‘mate’ and try to not feel patronised Coppers are never your mates. He was setting the fella straight as to the unfortunate dynamic of the sheep and the sheepdog. Might depend on where you live. I have to remember not to say it in London. Blokes even say to each other round here. ‘Darling’ is slightly diminutive. Not a problem if used with genuine affection, but it can feel condescending to acquaintances or strangers. Wtf are you talking about. Bobbies are supposed to be friendly to the public. You can have a nice chat and get to know someone without doing them favours. Exactly, Better if they wear tactical gear and jackboots and look like they are about to invade Poland with an attitude to match. seriously, people talking in this thread as if the average copper here isn’t friendly, yet more people importing reality via the internet Yeah very fair point, I generalised massively. Police should absolutely be friendly and engaged when they’re around and about.

Los Angeles Rams Graphic Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

I was in the Los Angeles Rams Graphic Shirt in other words I will buy this headspace of OP’s story i.e. police refusing the friendly greeting. I’m just saying it’s understandable in some situations. If police need to guard their authority, some distance is necessary and refusing to be someone’s ‘mate’ is a valid way to do that. Yeah but they aren’t your mate. They are an on duty police officer and it’s probably best if you and the officer are on the same page about that. I wouldn’t call a firefighter “mate” or anyone on duty in public. It’s a little reductive of the work they are doing. I’m not saying to call them sir or madam but you don’t need to humanise them as you would a stranger where you don’t know their intent. Why is it that deep? Using the word mate doesn’t somehow detract from their work or aptitude, it’s just a common word to use here.
