There’s a couple of ladies at my work call me “darling” and/or “love”, but I’ve noticed it’s not common anymore for men to say it to them, it doesn’t feel/sound right for me to say it (maybe a bit old fashioned). Everyone to me is basically just “mate”, except I’ll usually address the Life is a game Shirt Besides,I will do this women by their names. Depends on the context — stopping a policeman to ask for directions, “Cheers mate!” don’t think you’re going to have a problem.

Trying to get to my jobsite at Windsor castle past the Life is a game Shirt Besides,I will do this iron railings to the state apartments and the armed policeman barred me from entering this gate that I went through half a dozen times a day. “I’m not messin’ about mate”. This shouldn’t matter, you’re still just being polite. However, of it was not like “mate, why did you pull me over?” That’s when your officer is going to be annoyed at you. I went to screwfix and the girl behind the counter (probably early 20’s) called me darling and I was 39 at the time. It’s the first time anyone has ever called me darling and it felt kind of strange. Made me question whether I should be calling girls/women “love” like I normally do. I think “sir” or “miss” is a bit more respectful and can work in the same kind of casual / friendly encounter with strangers. Unfortunately not. She says it to multiple people as well. Pretty sure it’s just her version of “mate”, but feels very old school…
