The reasoning is that eventually it will come around to our turn to not work the 13 hour shift, or work the 11 hour one and it all evens itself out. In reality you have either changed shift, or the shift pattern has changed by then. You curse yourself wondering why on God’s green earth you made this awful decision to work this horrible job, and then you work an extra hour. The pay off is that in 6 months you lose an hour but still get paid for that disappearing hour. The good news is that the extra hour pays double-time. Conversely in the spring, you only work an 11 hour shift. Yes, we just go home and leave all the patients, heart monitors, IV’s and ambulances entirely unattended for an hour. The place is deserted. I work 8 hours so it doesn’t matter what the clock says. Not suddenly working 9 hours because of an outdated tradition. Realistically, places that operate 24 hrs really don’t need to make any changes.
