Sometimes they do not give you an extra hour of pay but dont make you lose it when you spring foward (and lose an hour). We do get paid overtime for that hour. When I was the assistant manager of a group home, the company paid everyone working an hour of overtime. I actually thought that was a class act. A lot of similar companies would have tried to juggle schedules or use salaried staff to try to eliminate that overtime. Under any other circumstances I was expected to minimize overtime. But that one time every year the company just bit the bullet and paid. It was probably less than $2k total across the whole company. We work an extra hour and cry knowing that dayshift slept an extra hour. But we do get paid for the extra hour, and then there’s and extra weird area to chart in for the coalitions hour too for our documentation purposes

For the opposite when they roll the clocks forward, we still got paid for 8 hours despite only working 7. Pretty nice. We climbed on chairs and changed all the clocks in the patient’s rooms. Working 13.5 hours (1/2 hr unpaid lunch) sucks, but working spring forward sucked too because you only got paid for 11 hours. Interestingly, when it went the other way in springtime and we lost an hour (technically only worked 7 hours) we still got our full 8 hours pay. I am a retired nurse. In the 80’s and 90’s (in BC Canada) we used to work the extra hour and not get paid for it. If we worked one hour less in the spring we’d get paid for the hour that we didn’t actually work. Management said that it all worked out the same in the end but I think I worked the extra hour for free more than I got the spring one. By the 2000’s the hours got paid properly but on a 12 hour nightshift it’s a drag to work an extra hour. Another drag is if you “spring forward” on a night before you go in for a day shift – you get an hour’s less sleep. The very worst of all is if you spring forward on a night between your 12 hour day shifts so already short on sleep and now get only 11 hours off between your day shifts.
