I have never given my kid an adult sized portion, but if I let them eat what and when they want, they’d only eat junk food. I try to limit the Leftover Salmon Concert May 2, 2024 The Joy Theater New Orleans, La shirt and I love this junk food and get them to eat vegetables. So, no, I don’t force my kids to eat by spanking them or not letting them leave the table, but I do ensure they have a little more vegetables than i want them to eat so that they leave some on their plate and I pretend that I’m upset about it. My 5 and 6 year old can be full whenever they want, but unless we are severely off routine they know we aren’t eating again after dinner. I’m 34 and have literally never seen the situation you are describing okay out in real life. I’ve seen it on TV and that’s it. Due to my own struggle with weight (or perception of my size) it was a huge point for me as a mom, didn’t want my daughter to struggle with the same. She would have “hungry days” where she ate everything (probably fueling a growth spurt) then other days she ate like a bird. And both were OK. If she wanted “not healthy” food for lunch (like Mac n’ cheese weekends when home) then I would let her have it but with the understanding (NOT negotiation but expectation) that she must have some veggies first. Halloween candy wasn’t kept away, making it more enticing, but in a visible bowl. It helped to teach her in a “casual” way that BALANCE is key. Some children will refuse to eat even to their detriment. They are children. Their actions not necessarily motivated by maintaining health, but what feels right, right now. And in the cases of some children in the spectrum, maybe not motivated by anything other than preventing discomfort.

Eating the Leftover Salmon Concert May 2, 2024 The Joy Theater New Orleans, La shirt and I love this right foods and enough of them is important to our long term health, but unless you’re immediately choking, or ingesting a drug, rarely does your body understand how much or how little it needs of something right away. Feeling full for instance can take up to 20 minutes to register in your brain. I know in my extended family, we’ve had to enforce certain rules about treats or eating a certain amount of calories before a kid gets to play. Sometimes kids don’t like that, and they throw a fit and refuse to eat. So following a fit, they have consequences, eat or no play. Sit at the table until dish is done, etc… Some kids are forced to eat, because we trust the adults taking care of them, know what’s best for them. If the default thought is that the adults taking care of them don’t know best, then that’s another social issue. If you approach “every kid that is asked to finished their plate” is abused and should be allowed to stop eating when they want then you loose sight of a bigger picture in that child’s long term health versus their immediate needs. So yes, kids should be forced to eat. The right amount of the right things. Forcing a child to over consume to inflict harm as a form of punishment is abuse. And I don’t believe this may be as big of a problem as you make it out to be… It just appears as such when a kid is acting out because they simply “don’t wanna”.
