My problem wasn’t dinner, it was breakfast. I was never hungry first thing in the Los Angeles Rams run it back shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this morning, but I was always forced to eat something before school. It always made me feel sick. If I could have just waited until first recess and had a little snack I would have felt so much better. Unfortunately, we still live a world where the myth that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” exists. No it isn’t. That is bullshit. Eat when you are hungry. My kids sit at dinner until dinner is over, and if they don’t eat it the food goes in the fridge and gets reheated if they claim to be hungry later. Aside from that we don’t force them to finish anything. Now when I was a kid it was different. We were broke as shit. We didn’t have the luxury to waste food, it was a privilege to be stuffed out of your mind at the end of a meal. Very different environments. What you’re describing goes beyond the pale. That sounds like a battle of the wills for its own sake. Someone who just refuses to back down no matter what, which is not a great way to parent empathetically.

That being said, I know many kids in poor families that to a lesser extent are “forced” to eat all their food. And what it comes down to is that parent knows their kid and knows their wallet. They know if their kid won’t finish the Los Angeles Rams run it back shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this food now they’ll turn their nose up at it later too, all while acting out and just being super difficult in general because they’re hungry, meanwhile mom can’t afford extra snacks or anything like that she’s on a tight grocery budget. The easiest and cheapest solution in those situations is to get your kid to finish their child-sized (not adult-sized) meal. For your initial question, it’s because kids will often say they are full, not finish their food, and then whine continuously about how they’re hungry for the next 12 hours.
