Yeah the Just a girl who loves gymnastics heart pink T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this funny thing too is that people always count things like Longest Road towards the leader’s points, which is super transient. So people gang up and shut down the leader and then somebody swoops in and overtakes it, leading to a 4 point swing, which is huge when you only need 10 to win. The Cities and Knights expansions address this with it’s reworking of the dev card concept with cards specifically designed to help players who are behind. This just isn’t true at all. Getting too strong of a start can be quite negative because you get ganged up. Proper pacing is a big part of competitive catan. And if someone is getting too strong, you feed weaker players so they get tied, army, or other settlements to the detriment of the guy who is winning. I always felt like Catan was just things happening to you with very little choice that mattered. Carcassone is a fun/simple game that beats it easily in my mind.

I find Carcasonne to be much more repetitive than Catan and prefer Catan. Carcasonne is much more meditative and good for conversation, though. I love Carcassone. It’s always paired with Catan in my mind since I got to know them both at the Just a girl who loves gymnastics heart pink T-Shirt Also,I will get this same family reunions, but I used to think of Catan as the superior one and Carcassone as a fun side entertainment. Now I find Carcassone much better and I still sometimes play it, but haven’t touched Catan in many years. The problem is that in Catan a few dice rolls in the beginning can really make or break the game. The early game advantages compound throughout the game. There’s no “rubber banding” mechanics, which is when the people in the lead are disadvantaged relative to the people behind (think of how in Mario kart the last positions get the best items). Catan is the opposite where people who have an early lead get further and further ahead in general.
