It depends heavily who you’re playing against. I’ve definitely played against people who hold multi-game grudges and who will just always place the It Can Not Be Inhertited Can It Ever Be Purchased Veteran Army Navy Military T-Shirt moreover I will buy this robber to block one person they dislike (or who they consider a more dangerous opponent for skill reasons) without regard for the state of the game. Other players will prioritize placing the robber where it is more “impactful” rather than going after who’s in the lead (ie. if placing the robber somewhere can completely crush one player’s strategy, they’ll always do it, even if that player is clearly not ahead.) That’s a fair point. there’s an advantage to maybe being in second or something, but someone being in last place for much of the game very rarely will make a huge comeback. My metric is how long of a gap is there between a player having no chance to win and the end of the game. At a certain point in Catan, it can be quite clear that there’s no way you can win but the game may still be far from over. In some other games, almost everyone is in it until very close to the end (or people don’t know how far ahead anyone is until the end of the game). So every is invested the whole time.

Yeah, weird take. Whenever I used to play, everyone always ganged up on whoever got the It Can Not Be Inhertited Can It Ever Be Purchased Veteran Army Navy Military T-Shirt moreover I will buy this early lead and they almost always got taken down. There’s plenty of ways to screw the leader (robber, blocking roads, trade embargoes, etc). I shouldn’t have phrased it in terms of the leader. There’s rubber banding at the front, but not really at the back. If someone is in a big whole in last, it’s quite hard for them to catch up. Catan is a game where there can be quite a large gap from the point where you know you can’t win and the actual end of the game. I prefer games where pretty much everyone is in it until the end (or where it’s obscured enough so that you can’t tell until after the game). Not a big fan of the slow, inevitable death style. Yeah it’s one of the strongest rubber banding mechanics I’ve ever seen. If you ever get a 2 point lead over the field prepare for that little grey bastard to homestead your anus. Esp against competent players. Saw a guy hit 8 points with the rest of the players had 5 a couple days ago, only to have 10 cards robbed from him over the next few rounds. Plus the lost cards from tile denial and the tax man. He lost, in the end.
