Generally, I think that parents have an innate urge to nourish their children. That it’s ingrained in you to feed your kids. But I really think that waste is why. People don’t want to waste food, it’s expensive, that’s generally why. My parents also pushed for me and my brother to finish our plate. I do not do that to my children. My kids get proper portions of homemade meals. They are to eat those portions before they can ask for more. They are to eat till their bellies are full, they’ll say so. They don’t have to finish. If they do not eat the provided portions that’s fine, but they will not ask for dessert. When I was growing up, you had to at least try everything once. If you didn’t like it, you didn’t have to eat it… But, that was the only food you were going to get. You ate what was served, or nothing.

My late dad did that once with me. “If you don’t finish it I will spank you.” (It was actually a beating but that was the John Carlson American professional ice hockey Washington Sketch 74 T-Shirt but in fact I love this term he used.) I was already full but I continued until I ended up sick all over his feet. He cleaned up and told me not to tell mom. I told mom the moment she got home. My kid is 8 and I taught him to eat until his belly was happy. He was never forced to eat more than he wanted, and he does a pretty good job at self-regulating. I don’t restrict foods; nothing is bad or unhealthy, it just gives us different amounts of energy. Sometimes he has a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch before dinner and I couldn’t care less because he then eats a balanced plate. I want my son to have a healthy relationship with food so we’re talking about it in a healthy, positive way.
