Hah, agree with every part of that. It’s funny because until I joined some of these sub reddit I had no idea what leetcode was. My job is certainly to solve problems, I don’t understand how doing code in a browser window is going to prove that better than me simply talking and walking a person through solutions. And yeah, no way in hell I can compete against a college grad on those tests. I can understand why they’re there for them, but jebus man, find a better interview process for seniors. When I meet with clients I’m certainly not going over specific algorithms and code, I’ve gotta tackle things at a high level if I want them to understand anything Exactly. Higher level.. and knowing how to talk to it.. that is why years of experience allow you to do that. As a senior/lead/staff you’re more often dealing with people like a manager.. but more technical usually. Manager relays what you talk to them to other managers/higher ups in a more “business” manner.. where as you’re talking to them at the higher level tech side of things.. so you’re translating lower level stuff in to higher level tech to make more sense to those that are not able to grasp the lower level stuff. They then translate that to the business/vp/cto/etc level so that all the ducks line up from top to bottom, bottom to top.

There is a unbelievable amount of stuff to learn.. that you learned.. and that changed.. from 10 to 20 years ago to now. And it’s getting worse.. cause things are evolving even faster. So seniors to lead/staff should not have to know/learn ALL of it. They should be able to have juniors/interns/mids even know more of that. Otherwise.. juniors/mids wouldn’t ever be needed. Could just have seniors do it all.. which is sadly the case in a lot of companies. Doesn’t matter how many yoe you have or how good your resume looks, most companies will initially treat you like you might be a con artist. They won’t assume you know how to code regardless of what’s on your resume, and will want to test you for themselves. That’s where asking leetcode and programming puzzles comes in even for senior devs.
