I’m a beginner, so I hesitate to even answer, but my impression of what it should be, and what I try to do, is to focus on something that will calm and center you. All these random thoughts that we normally have (about our responsibilities or anything about the Its Not The Speed It’s The Results Global Remote Worker Turtle T-Shirt moreover I will buy this past or potential future) keep us from being in the present, and from getting in touch with our true feelings. So when I find my mind wandering, I accept those thoughts as something I’m interested in thinking about, and if they are worth revisiting I’ll get back to them later, and redirect my focus back to the meditation. The act of redirecting the mind over and over again, as well as holding the attention where you want it, trains you to focus your attention at will.

And, I guess, clearing the Its Not The Speed It’s The Results Global Remote Worker Turtle T-Shirt moreover I will buy this mind of useless noise should allow us to recognize deeper thoughts and truths. Allow us to challenge the validity of our internal narratives. Maybe just find a moment of peace. Or we can use our focusing skills to further develop positive emotions that will help us be happier and kinder people. I think if you’re “thinking” about your current experience in the present, that’s fine, and if your contemplating deeper questions or ideas you just want to sit with the concept in a general way. Don’t be debating both sides in your mind and trying to solve the problem. That may be useful but it isn’t meditation. I think you meditate ON things when you’re being pulled in too many directions to know what’s what or what to do. Things may become clear as you meditate, because you stop thinking (on a surface level) and worrying. You ponder it in your heart, in peace, and with any luck everything unimportant will fall away, and leave you with a clear sense of what is true, or right for you.
