There really shouldn’t be a goal, but if there is, then that goal is probably recognition of the true self. The thinking mind cannot recognize the self. Therefore, if the thinking mind is not operating, it may be easier to recognize the true self that is always present. Thoughts aren’t the problem. It is our attachment to the “I” thought that causes suffering. You simply want to observe thoughts without being attached to or creating an “I”. For me it’s always to become a strict observer of everything happening around me, no thoughts, no anxiety, just the moment and what is front of me Eliminating thought is something that can potentially happen in deep states of concentration and stillness. But that’s a very advanced practice, and one doesn’t necessarily directly try to stop or suppress thoughts. Rather, thoughts slow down and stop on their own as a byproduct of one’s meditation practice. You cannot simply be aware of thoughts coming and going while simultaneously reaching the deepest depths of meditation. Those depths are marked by a ceasing of all doing, which includes thinking. To be in one of these states is to be incapable of having a thought until the state ends on its own. So no it’s not just something people say, it is very much a description of the way you would find yourself if you were as far as meditation goes. You can be aware of your thoughts and be entirely content with them without any resistance, it’s not the same thing as not having them entirely… or to take it a step further, not even being capable of having them if you wanted to. Imagine yourself sitting outside in nature. You feel comfortable, sitting there in stillness. As you sit and blankly stare ahead, you notice a moth enter your field of vision from the side. It is far away enough for you to be assured that it will seemingly float in the wind and move across your awareness and disappear.

That is a single thought that floats up from your mind as you sit. It enters your awareness. We talk about mindfulness because Burmese monks developed a practice based on the Satipatthana Sutta — the Establishing of Mindfulness in the Pali canon. Your goal is entirely up to you, for meditation is a personal tool the sole use of which is to advance in whatsoever direction you yourself choose.
