They still distribute iodine to areas surrounding nuclear power reactors in case there ever was an emergency, but you are far more likely in your lifetime to get radiation exposure due to nearby coal power reactors. The extra iodine came from processing fuel that hadn’t been allowed to decay and is called a ‘green run’. These were implemented during WWII but, for reasons never adequately explained, continued into the Indiana Jones Pop Art Style T-Shirt but in fact I love this 70s mid-60s. It’s a bit light on the technical details and there are some anecdotes that really don’t tally up with the science (forgivable, just don’t treat her word on these as gospel) but Kate Brown’s Plutopia is perhaps the best collection of the twin histories of Hanford and Chelyabinsk (the Soviet equivalent). For more technical stuff, there’s no one book I could recommend but have a poke through the works of Richard Rhodes. I’d also recommend the works of David E. Hoffman as a nice middle ground and the INL/INEEL book Proving the Principle . On a parallel note, Midnight in Chernobyl is a must-read if you were interested by the series and want a more accurate account with a wider range.

I don’t know what the Indiana Jones Pop Art Style T-Shirt but in fact I love this exact details of the contracts were (surprisingly) but green runs don’t let you produce plutonium in greater quantities, that’s limited by the reactor and only let the first batch get delivered sooner. Have you experienced any new health issues in the last 3 years? Also, I’d be surprised if something that catastrophic happened nearby and no one ever talks about it. Yeahhhh. This is unnerving but I’m not at all surprised. I lived there for late middle and high school. I have a thyroid disorder. So did my dog. The vet said that she saw a LOT more thyroid disorders in tri-cities than where she moved from (Arizona, I think?). Fought a few wildland fires out there in the 90’s on Hanford. The shit that’s still out there is boggling and so close and upwind to the Tri Cities area. The FM radio broadcast about “If you lived here and have these problems” from the gov’t were fucking creepy.
