What changed was ultimately the desire for results winning out over the boredom. I still don’t get that runner’s high people talk about, but I have found that total focus on one physical task really helps clear my head after a stressful day. I go to the gym more for that mental break now, where my brain kind of goes on standby because it doesn’t need to do anything except focus on a movement and count to ten. The physical benefits have become a nice bonus. When the pain of staying the way you are is more than the pain of changing. That’s how. When you look in the mirror and get sick from what you see. When you get winded for the third time just trying to go to the bathroom. When things like this start to effect you more than the pain of fixing it, you do what you gotta do.

It gets a lot less boring once you start achieving serious gains/progress. It is definitely not pleasant at first, but once your body adjusts & you stop getting sore it starts to become pretty enjoyable pretty quickly. Having a workout partner/buddy can be a huge help motivation-wise. I started getting back into shape a few months ago when I adopted a big dog that needs lots of exercise. I HAVE to take him out every day or he’ll just be like a Hurricane in the I’m The Walmart Elf 2023 Christmas shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this house. Turns out going for hikes with him in the mornings is actually benefiting ME even more than him (regarding my physical and mental health). It’s not motivation, it’s discipline: it’s like going to work, but the payoff is your body. There are days I go to the gym and I don’t even want to be there, but I do the sets anyway, even if I settle for half-assing it. Wise man once said that a good physique (and good health) is the ultimate status symbol because you can’t buy it, you can’t steal it, the only way to get it is to do the work yourself (and maybe some juicy vitamins, but whatever). I keep thinking that as I do my workout.
