My boss was FURIOUS because someone mentioned raises after no feeling appreciative through Covid in the I’m running for a cause I have to poop shirt moreover I will buy this hospital. We’re $3 million in the hole and you ask for a raise?” The day before we heard our hospital is buying another hospital near by and they’re also building another smaller hospital in town. Yeah, they sure don’t have money ? It actually baffles me that this is what regular American workers have to worry about when attempting to create some upward mobility in their lives. I really hope the employment landscape changes for the better in the states and starts adopting a more European outlook on worker’s rights; fucking depressing that this is a thing. Ok America, there’s any quirks and features of all that freedom and I’ve made my peace with the whole gun violence, school shooting drills, dying from because you can’t afford insulin, no paid time off, a minimum wage from the 80’s, lifelong college debt and.. tipping.. But being asking for a raise being a friable offence??

I’m in a corporate role where I have visibility to payroll for pretty much my entire company. Leadership is currently facing a massive attrition problem, and I can promise you that 95% of the time when we end up backfilling someone who left, we are paying their replacement 10-20% more than they were making. The kicker is that more often than not, a 5-10% raise would have kept the employee from seeking other employment in the first place. Just last year I pushed back on my boss for a raise for an employee I was promoting; she wanted $10k more than HR’s initial offer, my boss would only approve $5k more. She left within 3 months. Any qualified backfill candidate wanted minimum $15k more than what we were paying the original employee. My boss’s attempts at saving $5k annually ended up with us losing a high performer (and all her institutional knowledge/years of investment on our end in her training), $10k more annually than what my employee originally asked for, and a one time 20% recruiting fee for the backfill. Not to mention the opportunity cost of all of MY time spent training the backfill vs. doing other work. “We can’t afford to give raises because my gigantic capitalist cock loves profit and can’t spare any crumbs for you all”
