Haha, well anyone who knows me for more than a week eventually finds out I’m a Barenaked Ladies information sponge & regurgitator. I’m not even joking. My parents’ first date was a Barenaked Ladies show back in 1990 and I listened to their stuff constantly growing up. Their first album Gordon is my favourite album ever. I’ve found it morbidly funny that to fight the Ukrainian “not-zee”s, the Russians branded their gear with Zs. It’s almost like Putin started this war because he was confused about the alphabet. In the Philippines, the English we use derives from American English (public schools were established when the Philippines was under American rule in the 1900s) so we also pronounce Z as “Zee” instead of “Zed”. I was very surprised by this title as every country I’ve ever been to besides Canada and the UK use ‘zee’ when speaking English. Guess I just haven’t been to very many English speaking countries. There are a lot of Filipinos in both Malaysia & Singapore, thus it is pretty common to hear “zee”s flying around too. And since many of those Filipinos in MY/SG are domestic workers, guess which version of Z are they singing to children?

Born and raised in Canada, most of my friends call it Zee. I’ve heard more people call it that than Zed The interesting thing is z is the Ich Bin Beamter In Der Ruhe Liegt Die Civil Servant T-Shirt moreover I love this only letter that took this etymological route. Zeta -> zed but beta -/-> bed. it’s not the only consonants(. . . ish) whose name is something other than itself paired with a vowel, though. look at W! and what is up with H? That wasn’t quite what I was getting at. There are a few letter that end in -eta from Greek but only zeta went to zed. We don’t have bed or id. As a kid I never understood why he was the only MiB agent that got a name while everyone else had a letter. I was just assumed it was because he was in charge. Makes perfect sense in hindsight. 2 more repliesmost alphabetical pronunciations either end in a long vowel sound (A,B,C,D = Ay, Bee, See, Dee) or start with a vowel and end with the consonant sound of the letter (F,L,M,X = eF, eL, eM, eX) and I don’t see why Z should be an exception to this “Zee” always made sense to me because roughly a 1/3 of letters are pronounced as “a/the sound that they make” + “ee” Growing up as a child in Detroit I had access to the Windsor, Ontario Channel 9 station. It was there that I learned about “zed” from watching the Polka Dot Door.
