I tried to argue with him about it one time but he just couldn’t understand/did not care about his own safety or the fact that I might not want to see his mangled body through my windshield because he refuses to wear a seatbelt. Yup. That sort of thing works out for years until it doesn’t. Minor car accidents aren’t that uncommon. A minor accident can turn into a major one without a belt. Not to mention the fines you can get when caught. You are not being unreasonable, you are being safe. You are well within your right to refuse to drive her around in your car if she won’t wear a seat belt, and I would strongly encourage you to do so while telling her that the concern is for her safety, and that it isn’t personal. I’m sorry, it can be difficult to discuss and set hard boundaries with best friends. I wish you luck, and if you are struggling to find a way to formulate your request to her, I would recommend using a DBT (therapy that teaches skills) technique called “DEAR MAN”, which walks you through making a request of someone in a fair way that is respectful to both of you

I’m not sure if your friend is sitting in the front or the back seat of your car, or switching around depending on other people. But unbelted passengers in the rear seats increase the likelihood of a belted front seat occupant dying in a crash by 5x because they become a ~155lb meat missile. Not to mention they die too, if that’s not obvious. Unbelted front seat occupants are 3.5x more likely to die in a crash than a belted occupant. Unbelted occupants are also 30x more likely to be ejected from the vehicle in a crash, and 3 out of 4 individuals ejected do not survive. Your best friend is putting BOTH of your lives in danger, not just hers. I refused to start driving when I was first beginning to drive with my friends in the car if they wouldn’t buckle up, and told some they were welcome to walk. Don’t settle for anything but a belted passenger, if they won’t, kick them to the curb (safely).
