Alleged psychological difficulties. Oftentimes adults like to externalize the consequences of catastrophic incidents and/or their own poor childcare as a behavioral problem. It’s convenient, removes the responsibility, and the drugs make kids sleepy and quiet. States have already been sued and lost. Nothing happens. IL’s DCFS has been held in contempt of court, including its officials. Nothing happens. This is an issue in Vermont although the state does cover it. It’s not uncommon for a child to be in a psychiatric hospital under DCF care and then the hospital say “ok they’re stable and ready for discharge.” and DCF say “Yeah we don’t have any place to send them so you can hold onto them.” Then a kid who’s been stable to discharge gets stuck inpatient for several months. It’s a horrible situation.

And that’s also one child psych bed being taken up unnecessarily, meaning it’s unavailable for another person who does have a medical need for it. Kids are being kept in psych hospitals, because these hospitals have to take them, and there’s no place else for them to go. Everyone agrees they shouldn’t be there, but it’s a simple question, where do you then send them? IL is one of the worst states in the country for this stuff. IL’s DCFS has been sued, officials have been sued. We’ve spent decades getting rid of group homes and institutions. Now we have no place to put individuals. The families won’t take the kids back, other group homes won’t take them or they have no room. The blame isn’t on DCFS, honestly. They don’t want these kids in hospitals either. Our country just doesn’t want to spend the money investing in places to send these kids.
