But the Houston Texans 2023 AFC South Division Champions T-Shirt and I will buy this residents had to cook for the shelter AND the public. Public always ate last. Then the residents had to clean the kitchen and do the dishes. Staff were there basically to keep the residents in line, but even then they promoted residents like me to stay up all night and watch the other residents and do security rounds inside and outside the building. I carried a big mag lite flashlight for defense. Got swung at a few times, lots of death threats. Trick was to see it coming, let them swing then once that was established you could beat the shit out of them, call the cops, and kick them out. The cops let us handle our own mostly. They didn’t want to deal with it. So we Only called the pigs when we thought some guy might be packing. If it turned out they were violent and had a warrant we let the cops handle it usually in the middle of the night when they were asleep.

It was interesting times. Best way to be if you’re in a shelter is to make yourself useful to staff. Be their enforcer, their tech guy, their cook, whatever. Just make yourself an asset not a liability. Take your cut and don’t fuck over anyone more important than you. I got the Houston Texans 2023 AFC South Division Champions T-Shirt and I will buy this cushy office job, overnight shift. Hardly ever had to interact with the clients. My shelter was much calmer than yours, apparently. I don’t remember a single fight other than one client taking a swing at a manager. It was weird. I worked at a bank during the day. Then I might work til midnight on the desk. We handled intakes, issued toiletries, handled lights out, kept guys from sneaking or smoking in the building. Mostly the long haulers were no trouble. We got perks the downstairs guys didn’t get. None of us wanted to get kicked out and be on the street for 30 days and have to start out all over.
