Long haulers policed themselves mostly, if they wanted to smoke in the I’m Not A Player I’m A Gamer Players Get Chicks I Get Bullied at School Sonic T-Shirt in addition I really love this middle of the night they knew they could come down and offer me a cig or two and we would go smoke together. It was good times and bad times for sure. It was fun having friends around. But it was degrading having to go to chapel and pretend to be a Christian. I knew a lot of guys that died living there. Vietnam vets, lots of those guys. Guys abandoned by their family. Good guys often. We were all trash as far as society was concerned. Many years ago the shelter allowed sex offenders. The public assumed that was still the case. Yelled shit at us. Called us pedophiles. None of us were, not so far as the law was concerned. We were the domesticated homeless. Manners and discipline. Took off our hats for prayer. Didn’t cause a ruckus generally. Clean and sober (mostly). But we were in the same category as the feral homeless. The street walkers. The campers and the crusties. The rotten rusties. So many dead men, I remember them often. Rest easy you bastards. The world forgot you a long time ago, but I didn’t. Damn that reminded me of when I volunteered at homeless shelters/soup kitchens years ago. The one thing that really bothered me was how they “forced” homeless people to sit for service/mass or wouldn’t serve them food. I thought it was weird how clearly most of the homeless at that shelter weren’t religious (would you honestly be in their position?) but the leadership at those shelters still forced it. See, christians do not give anything for free. You always have to pay for it. It always comes with strings attached. You have to pray, you have to pretend to be a repenting sinner so they can preach to you and they can feel good about themselves, they can call themselves good christians doing the Gods work, you have to thank Jesus for your food even though Jesus had nothing to do with it. It is all about them being above you, feeling better than you and feeling good about themselves and fuck you and your feelings.

Had a relative who worked for a food bank. There were times they’d claim there was no way they’d be able to use as much of X thing as they’d have so they’d send boxes of food home with employees and volunteers. Literal boxes of beef roasts, premade sandwiches, hams it was crazy and I still don’t understand it. You still can’t serve expired food, and food that is commonly donated is almost always close to expiring (which is why it’s being donated). So if you get a big donation of a certain thing, even if you have food prep facilities (which many food banks do not) and you can’t prep it in time, it’s better to just send it home with people instead of throwing it out. I kind of get it. I worked for an org that provided services for people with intellectual disabilities. I barely made above minimum wage and had to deal with cleaning people’s shit and getting hit/bit. We would do runs for meals on wheels, and occasionally someone wouldn’t be there to take the I’m Not A Player I’m A Gamer Players Get Chicks I Get Bullied at School Sonic T-Shirt in addition I really love this delivery and without explicit directions from the recepient we weren’t supposed to just leave it at their door.
