I think it’s also worth noting that it’s also used as a false declaration of sensibility. People love to paint it as the Hawkins 86 State champions Shirt Apart from…,I will love this sensible “middle” of two extremes. The political spectrum is an abstract concept and not a physical object though and often times the other sides aren’t actually extreme. For this reason the stance doesn’t actually make sense as it’s not actually in the middle of anything, it’s just another point of view (the spectrum is just an imperfect abstraction to help people understand politics. You could also paint it simply as Dems/GoP on the “action” side of the spectrum and centrists at the other “inaction” side, both representing extremes). It’s also shown to definitely not be “sensible” while promoting inaction on issues with data proving the need for change.

In America a centrist would still be considered pretty conservative. I tend to see a lot of disdain towards centrism from the Hawkins 86 State champions Shirt Apart from…,I will love this left in America because they do still tend to hold pretty conservative views. So I understand why they are looked down upon. I’m the right they may be looked down upon in the way they may hold some “liberal” It’s not in real life, most people are centrists I would assume. Atleast everyone I know and have talked to(I know, anecdote). Just on Reddit, and social media in general I think centrism gets a bad rep because of it’s history of complicity with regressive policy and keeping the status quo. On the left we recognize American “centrists” as part of something called the Ratchet Effect. Where our “centrist” liberal party, the Democrats gain power and then do next to nothing to move in a progressive (not even left) direction. Then when the GOP gains power off of the Democrats’ incompetence, they do all the regressive and proto-fascist shit. Then the Dems sit there and act like there was nothing they could do when they had the power. Everything turns right, never left, like a ratchet.
